Consumer Unit Upgrade in Belton, Norfolk

The Brief

A family home in Belton, Norfolk had a 30-year-old consumer unit with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection across any circuits. The homeowners were planning an EV charger install and wanted the consumer unit upgraded to current 18th edition standards first, so the new charger circuit could be added safely on the same job.

What We Did

The work was completed in a single morning visit:

• Pre-install survey: Walked through every circuit on the old board, labelled each one, and confirmed how many circuits the new unit would need to take.
• Power isolation: Coordinated with the homeowners around the 3-hour power-off window, working when the kids were at school so the disruption was minimal.
• Old board removed: Disconnected and stripped out the old fuse board, capping the meter tails and inspecting the bonding.
• New Hager RCBO consumer unit fitted: A 14-way Hager unit with full RCBO protection per circuit. Each circuit was reconnected, labelled, and tested individually before re-energising.
• Full installation test: Insulation resistance, earth continuity, RCD trip-time, polarity. All circuits passed first-time.
• EIC and NAPIT notification: Electrical Installation Certificate issued and the install notified to building control via NAPIT, which was emailed to the homeowner the same day.

The Result

A modern, code-compliant consumer unit with full RCBO protection across every circuit. The homeowners now have an installation that will pass any future EICR and that's ready to take the new EV charger circuit (booked in for the following week).
